What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is the collection of fat that pushes against your skin. It often appears on your thighs, stomach and butt. Cellulite can make the skin look lumpy and dimpled.
Who gets Cellulite?
Cellulite is very common. Between 80% and 90% of all women have cellulite, while less than 10% of men have cellulite.
Genetics, gender, age, BMI, and your skin’s thickness determine how much cellulite you have. As you age, your skin loses elasticity and can make the appearance of cellulite more evident. Gaining weight can also make the appearance of cellulite more prominent. Although people with obesity have cellulite, very lean people can also have cellulite.
What causes Cellulite?
Cellulite is caused by fibrous bands that connect your skin to the underlying muscle. They pull down on your skin, and the layer of fat beneath the skin pushes upward resulting in cellulite dimpling.
It’s not known why cellulite is more common in women than men, but one theory is that higher amounts of estrogen may cause cellulite.
How is Cellulite treated?
The FDA-approved collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes (Qwo™), a biologic injectable treatment for cellulite on the buttocks.
By injecting directly into cellulite, Qwo™ breaks down the collagenase bands that pull on the skin surface and contribute to “dimpling.” The most common side effects of Qwo™ were bruising and pain at the injection sites. How does Qwo work?
It’s thought that QWO works in 3 ways: releasing fibrous bands, redistributing fat cells, and stimulating the growth of new collagen. QWO is made from enzymes called collagenases. These enzymes target the fibrous bands that are pulling on your skin causing dimpling. By dissolving these bands, the appearance of cellulitis lessened.
