Many patients ask, what is the key to having great skin? Skincare doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. Five simple skincare steps can progress the changes that you want to see in your skin. Although a lot of external factors can affect your skin’s health like hormonal changes, aging, genetics, and diet, by performing the right skincare steps and following these basic tips you can achieve your best skincare health!
Wear SPF
The sun has the potential to damage, age, and dry out your skin. Even when it’s cloudy and even when you’re inside. Not only can the sun’s harmful rays cause skin cancer, but UV rays can cause premature wrinkles, sunspots, and hyperpigmentation. It is important to protect your skin by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher.
There are two types of sunscreens, physical blockers, and chemical absorbers. Physical sunscreens are sunscreens that contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These ingredients act as a physical shield for your skin as these ingredients reflect UV rays away. Chemical sunscreens create a thin film that protects the skin, and although applying a chemical sunscreen is better than no sunscreen, the best way to protect your skin is to use a physical zinc-based sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher. SPF measures the amount of UVB rays that the sunscreen blocks, and SPF 30 blocks 97% of all rays which is ample protection for your skin. SPF 100 blocks 99% of rays.
Remove Makeup Before Going to Sleep
Although removing your makeup adds an extra step to your nightly routine, it is a very necessary step. Letting your makeup sit on your skin overnight can clog pores, harbor bacterial growth, and cause breakouts. Such an easy step can prevent so much damage to your skin.
The best way to remove makeup is to remain gentle. Avoid scrubbing or tugging at your skin. My personal favorite makeup remover is micellar water as it is a gentle and nourishing alternative to remove face and eye makeup. Remove your makeup first step in the skincare routine, then proceed with washing your face after to remove any residual residue.
Adding a Vitamin C to your Routine
Not only can the addition of vitamin c to your skincare routine prevent aging, but it also has a list of added benefits. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, when used topically on the skin can hydrate, brighten, soothe, protect, and nourish the skin. It is truly a one stop shop to brighter, more even skin complexion. Vitamin C is applied as the first serum in your routine, after washing your face and after toning.
At Millefiori, we offer the Skinceuticals vitamin C collection: Phloretin CF, CE Ferulic, and Silymarin. Skinceuticals’ patented and clinically tested formulas are PH balanced to absorb into your skin and protect your skin from aging and free radicals. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!
Moisturizing everyday can decrease your skins’ risk of dryness and can even decrease the overproduction of oil on your skin. Moisturized skin repairs itself faster, helping your skin stay young and preventing the premature formation of wrinkles. Your skin’s moisture creates a barrier to protect itself from external factors.
I recommend moisturizing your skin twice a day. Once in the morning at the end of your skincare routine, and again at night before bed. Always wash your face prior to moisturizing and apply other serums thinnest to thickest prior to moisturizing.
And lastly… be Consistent
Just like gaining muscle at the gym, skincare changes don’t happen overnight. It doesn’t matter if you’re a skincare beginner or even the most advanced skincare junkie, skincare consistency is the key to see results. We can all agree that by following a few good skincare habits you will be able to create visible change and improvements in your skin, but you must remain diligent and consistent. Take my word for it, I use these steps at home in my routine and I have never been happier with my skin.
