How Does KYBELLA Work?
KYBELLA® contains a laboratory-made form of deoxycholic acid, a substance your body naturally uses during digestion to help break down dietary fat. When KYBELLA is injected into the fat beneath the chin, it damages the membranes of the treated fat cells. Your body then gradually clears those cells, reducing fullness in the area.
Once treated fat cells have been destroyed, they can no longer store fat. This is why additional KYBELLA treatments generally aren’t needed after you’ve completed your treatment plan and reached the desired level of correction. Changes in weight can still affect the appearance of the surrounding untreated fat cells.
What to Expect with Your KYBELLA Treatment?
At Millefiori, we schedule a complimentary consultation for all patients interested in KYBELLA. You will be evaluated by our Physician Assistant and owner, Iris Graham. She will determine if KYBELLA is right for you. She will then customize a treatment plan specific to your needs.
How Is KYBELLA Administered?
Only a trained professional, like those at Millefiori, can administer the treatment. After an evaluation, you’ll go through these steps:
- The injector will mark the area with a pencil.
- They will apply a stencil to determine the amount of the medication needed.
- They will apply ice to help with the initial sting of the needle and swelling.
At each session, you will receive multiple small injections of the medication into the chin area. The injection process takes about 15-20 minutes. The exact number of injections will depend on the amount of fat under the chin and your desired profile.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Your KYBELLA treatment plan depends on how much fullness you have beneath your chin and the amount of correction you’d like to see. We’ll evaluate the area before treatment and recommend the number of sessions that makes sense for you.
KYBELLA may be given in a series of up to six treatments, with each session scheduled at least one month apart. You may need fewer sessions depending on how the area responds and when you reach your treatment goal.
What Can KYBELLA Treat?
KYBELLA isn’t a general fat-reduction treatment for other areas of the face or body. Its safety and effectiveness for treating fat outside the submental area have not been established. It also doesn’t directly tighten loose skin, so identifying what is causing the fullness beneath your chin is an important part of determining whether KYBELLA is right for you.
KYBELLA® is FDA-approved for adults with moderate to severe fullness caused by fat beneath the chin, also known as submental fat. By reducing fat cells in this area, KYBELLA can improve the appearance of a double chin and create a more defined transition between the chin and neck.
Is My Double Chin Caused by Fat or Loose Skin?
Fullness beneath the chin can come from excess submental fat, skin laxity, your natural anatomy, or a combination of factors. Genetics and changes associated with aging can also influence how this area looks, even when your weight is stable.
KYBELLA specifically treats submental fat. When loose skin is a larger part of the concern, reducing fat alone may not create the result you want.
During your consultation, we’ll assess the area and discuss whether KYBELLA makes sense or whether a skin-tightening treatment such as Ultherapy PRIME may be more appropriate. In some cases, different concerns may call for more than one type of treatment.
