The skin condition looks like ‘redness over the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead’ and bumps ‘like acne, but not acne’ – and it can make sufferers miserable
What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a very common skin disease. This skin condition often begins with a tendency to blush more easily than most, but the redness can spread to other areas on the face. Those with rosacea often have permanent redness on the cheeks.
Who gets Rosacea?
Truly, anyone can get rosacea. Rosacea is most common among these groups: older adults, women, people with fair skin. It is important to note that it may be underdiagnosed in darker skinned people because darker complexions can hide facial redness
What causes Rosacea?
It is unknown as to what causes rosacea. By studying rosacea, scientists have found some important clues:
- It is possible that people inherit genes for rosacea since rosacea runs in families.
- The immune system could play a role since most people with acne-like rosacea react to a bacterium called bacillus oleronius.
- A bug that causes infections in the intestines, H pylori, is common in people who have rosacea. Scientists have not been able to prove that H pylori actually can cause rosacea.
- A mite that lives on everyone’s skin, demodex, lives on the nose and cheeks, and this is where rosacea often appears.
- A protein that normally protects the skin from infection, cathelicidin, may cause redness and swelling. How the body processes this protein may determine whether a person gets rosacea.
Why treat Rosacea?
Some people develop acne-like breakouts caused by rosacea, and by treating your skin you can prevent these problems. Treating your rosacea may also improve your mental health. Many studies have shown that the constant redness, acne-like breakouts, and other signs of rosacea can lower a person’s self-esteem.
How is Rosacea treated?
There isn’t a cure for rosacea, but treatments can help you manage the symptoms and lessen their severity.
