Got Tech Neck?
Ahhh, I think of the good old days, where crow’s feet and smoker lines were all the rage in aging concerns. Technology is absolutely amazing! I can skype my brother in China in an instant, request an uber with a click on my phone, and check the latest world news from a digital device lighter than my old-school trapper-keeper (Lisa Frank all the way!). All the texting, instagramming and internet surfing from our mobile devices has created a new set of aging issues for both young and old…..THE TECH NECK!
WHAT IS TECH NECK?
What is heck is the tech neck? Long static lines (WRINKLES IN A NICE TERM) start to form along the creases of the neck from repetitive bowing of the head. I do perform a little Namaste bow after seeing my patients (I really don’t know why but it is a universal “thanks!”) but is that really causing my neck lines at 30!?!? Hours upon hours of looking down at phones, pads and all the other techie toys causes your head to tilt forward and creates the skin on the neck to develop increased laxity – causing excessive wrinkling and even droopy jowls! Wow, who would have thought these amazing gadgets would cause aging issues!
HOW TO FIX IT
Who are we kidding, it’s not like we’re ever going to give up our beloved iPhone (until the next one comes out of course), so what’s the plan of action. The first step in correcting the tech neck is recognizing the problem. If the repetitive motion is creating the lines – STOP THE REPETITIVE MOTION! Become mindful of your posture and adjust your neck to create a straight line from the hips through the top the head. It’s awkward at first (I’m practicing right now at our front computer and kind of awkward) but like anything you’ll get used to it. The second step is correcting the damage that’s been done. Bonus is that most of the treatments out there will correct the turkey jowl too or prevent it from happening for us spring chickens 😉 Treatments like chemical peels, micro-needling, and laser rejuvenation can all be successful of correcting the unsightly lines. Depending on the severity of the situation, pain may be involved as well, and speaking to your doctor about posture and chiropractic options may also be necessary.
Turtle necks are cute when it’s our 50 degree winter – not optimal when we’re having our 95% humidity and 100 degree July afternoons.
